 Mopar Tremec TKO Details
The Tremec Transmissions TKO-500 and TKO-600 are high performance, 5-speed overdrive transmissions offering the following features:
  • High torque capacities as advertised by Tremec. The Tremec TKO-500 is rated to handle 500 ft. lbs of torque and the Tremec TKO-600 is rated to handle 600 ft. lbs. of torque!
  • Unique internal shift-rail system that accommodates up to eight shifter locations ranging from 14” to 27” from face of the bell housing. This means more flexibility to fit most GM cars!
  • Increased gas mileage and lower cruising RPM’s due to 5th gear overdrive. You will experience as much as a 36% reduction in RPM’s while in 5th gear!
  • Rear cross member bolt pattern designed to fit most GM applications.
  • Billet aluminum, short throw shifter.
  • Speedometer pickups for either mechanical or electric speedometers.
  • 26 spline, 1 1/8” input shaft and 31 spline output shaft for added strength.
  • Re-designed and upgraded transmission internals for a stronger, longer lasting transmission.
  • Appropriate for street cruising and performance applications.
  • 180 day warranty from Tremec.

Tremec TKO applications and limitations
.

The Tremec TKO transmission is one of the strongest manual 5-speed overdrive street use transmissions produced today. There have been thousands of these units installed into muscle cars across the country and the results have been excellent.

The TKO transmission can best be described as a very strong and durable street transmission that can be driven hard and will last a long time. The most common use that we see is for the muscle car owner that desires a reliable, modern transmission with a lower first gear for a good launch off the line and a nice overdrive gear for low RPM highway cruising essentially giving the driver the “best of both worlds”. Additionally, you can also feel comfortable taking the car to the track for the occasional 1/4 mile run.

However, with the high horsepower and torque that we are able to easily create today, the Tremec TKO transmission does have its limitations and can fail if subject to excessive power and aggressive use. To date we have seen very few TKO failures. The common factor with these situations seems to be that they occurred in high horsepower/torque cars (over 500 ft/lbs of torque at the flywheel), with slick tires (like Mickey Thompson E/T’s), an aggressive hard clamping clutch, and high RPM power shifting (shifting above 6000 RPM’s).

As you already know when you race your car, parts can (and will) eventually break – whether it is a driveshaft, a rear end, a clutch, a transmission or an engine. If your car is primarily a race car and you are using the types of components described above you should consider using a dedicated race only transmission. With that said, there are many people running their TKO transmissions at the track without having any problems.

If you are looking for a modern style, durable, smooth shifting overdrive transmission for your street driven muscle car the Tremec TKO transmission is the best choice available.
