1970 Challenger

Installation Information

  1. Shifter location. Our custom designed tailhousing and shifter are designed to acheive perfect location within your stock console for a factory appearance. No console modifications are required.
  2. Tunnel fitment. In order for the TKO transmission to fit within the tunnel of a 1970-74 E-Body or 1971-74 B-Body it is necessary to cut the tunnel to acheive proper transmission fitment and driveline angle. Each Classic Mopar 5-Speed kit includes a template and tunnel patch. Once your interior and console are reinstalled, you will have a factory appearance.
  3. Crossmember & transmission mount. You will need a custom made crossmember designed specifically for the TKO conversion. A crossmember and a polyurethane transmission mount are included with each Mopar TKO kit.
  4. Bellhousing. You will need to use a Classic Mopar 5-Speed custom bellhousing that will adapt the TKO transmission to the Mopar engine block. This bellhousing is available from Classic Mopar 5-Speed.
  5. Clutch linkage. You will be able to use your stock clutch linkage.
  6. Driveshaft. You will need a new, shorter driveshaft with a 26 spline slip yoke. A new driveshaft with slip yoke and ujoints is included with each TKO kit.
  7. Speedometer and reverse lights. You will need a custom speedometer cable that is compatible with the TKO as well as your stock speedometer gauge. The TKO also has a provision for an electric speedometer. An electric speedometer wiring harness or a custom speedometer cable with the correct speedometer gear for your rear tire size and rear gear ratio is included with each of our conversion kits.
  8. Clutch components. You will need a 26 spline clutch disc. Replacing your pressure plate and clutch disc at the same time is recommended.

We are confident that installing a Tremec overdrive transmission will be one of the best improvements that you can make to your Classic Mopar and your driving experience will increase greatly because of it. With this in mind, it is also important to understand that anytime you install non-stock parts, of any type, in your car it is possible that things will not go exactly as planned and that some minor modifications may be required to your car or to the kit parts in order to achieve proper fitment. Because of slight variations on the production line when your car was built, past modifications to your car by previous owners, past accidents that your car may have been involved in, and after 30+ years of time on the road, each car is slightly different or unique in its own way.

We have made every attempt to make our Mopar TKO conversion kits in such a way that only minimal modifications are required and for majority of installations this is the case. However, it is important that you proceed with your installation knowing that some modifications other than those that have already been clearly stated, may be required.

While we are confident that you will be extremely happy with your new TKO overdrive transmission, it is important that you understand the potential realities with this install before you make your purchase rather than have you find out after the fact.
